Modem using data - even when nobody home and nothing connected

Hi,  I have an HG 659 modem which is on VDSL at our holiday home .  I got the data usage record from Voda and it shows it consuming approx 20,000 kb ( download)  1500 kb ( upload ) every hour when i know that nothing is connected and we aren't home.  It also seems to consume huge amounts of data when using Smartvu. ( we go though 240GB a month over 6-7 days a month!)  I think something is not right but where do i start.

Have you looked in the modem user interface at the attached devices and seen if anything is attached that should not be?

A Smart TV will use loads of data especially if streaming in HD or 4K

Next time you leave turn off the router and then login and check the usage and see if it's climbing
