4g Wireless Broadband - speed degradation off tower in busy periods!

We are on ADSL/VDSL on the Coromandel eastern coast - speed fluctuates between 2Mbps-10mbps, pretty slow!

Vodafone have written offering a good deal on moving from copper to their 4G wireless broadband.

The speeds from the Tower on 4G (which we are close to, withing line of site) are in the 40-60Mbps/sec range - tested on my smart phone last weekend, very consistent.

But our location (and tower) is severely impacted by additional users over the holiday periods/weekends and the speed and capacity off the 4G/3G tower degrades back to sometimes below copper speeds.

On talking to the Vodafone Wireless 0800 line, they tell me they have been monitoring that cellsite for 2 years, with some upgrades, and they feel very comfortable that the 4G speeds and throuhput would remain consistent regardless of the number of users/devices over busy periods. I explained that this had not been the case last summer when population grows from 1000 to 20,000. They say that they have the capacity, but arent prepared to guarantee it!!

I am loathe to give up our copper broadband for wireless to have it degrade significantly in busy periods.

Any comments or thoughts ?

Cell sites are being upgraded all the time. In particular the months before the Rugby World Cup there was a huge amount of 4G upgrades happening. If we know which tower you're connecting to it can be checked if it's had an upgrade. Without giving your actual address (privacy) can you advise of location (e.g township, or beach etc) and we can take a look.

You can't be on ADSL/VDSL you are on one or the other and as Nigel has pointed out the mobile network is like a traffic on the road the more traffic things tend to slow down and over time more lanes are added to add extra capacity

Pauanui / Tairua cell site has 2G, 3G U900 and U2100 and 4G with L1800

Tairua Township has 2G, 3G U900 and U2100

4G L1800

You can use this website to get an idea of where various cell sites are located - https://gis.geek.nz/celltowers

Click filters to do a search etc.

Should be ok with all that 4G
