Defective modem

We consulted a ninja as our internet connection was suddenly disconnected. We were advised to be sent a new one in a few days. My son needs internet in his projects so we can't wait for the delivery of a new modem. Can we buy a modem so we can connect back right away? I presume we'll just be refunded for purchasing one in case.
