We have 200mbps fibre broadband with vodafone, using the supplied HG659 router modem. I want to improve wireless performance and range using an apple airport extreme, however try as I might I can only get half the download speeds with the airport. Here is my setup:
HG659 conected to airport extreme using LAN to WAN (on airport) ethernet.
Airport set to Bridge mode and creating a new wireless network.
Speeds from HG659 wireless are 200mbps, speeds from airport wireless are half that (when stood next to unit).
If I connect and ethernet cable from one of the airports LAN ports to my computer I get full 200mbps speed, so the HG659 is sending the full bandwidth to the aiport, so it's not an issue with the HG659 as far as I can tell.
As soon as we go wireless on the airport extreme we halve speeds.
This is a 4th gen airport extreme with gigabit ports so should be able to handle the speeds.
What is wrong?

What band are you connecting to on the airport?
You need to be on the 5Ghz band AC wifi to get faster speeds. See if you can force it onto 5ghz AC
2.4N will top out about 100 (despite what the spec says)

Which Airport Extreme is it?
The older ones only have a 100MBit ethernet port so it is that that will max out.

If it is cabled gigabit then that should be ok.
It which case it is really the wifi chipset. The Gen 4 is a bit older and 802.11n only so 100MBit may be what to expect on that and maybe the channel its using is congested or has interference (tried changing channel?)
The HG659 is 3x3 AC, so a better wifi speed.

Thanks, have changed channels and used apps to detect interference, not found any issues and changing channels made no difference.
802.11n has typical speeds of aroudn 450mbps, so that cannot be the issue either!

that only really leaves a close check of the airport wifi settings - sometthing not set right.
Can you factory reset the airport and see?
