If you bought a 'PrepayData' SIM , this plan cannot send SMS, so suspect this will not fit your needs.

We are a GSM network, and all of our standard SIM's support GPRS. Just buy whatever suits your needs, I imagine a prepay sim with pay & go plan would suit best, as I would think the device wouldn't use very much data.

I bought a standard Vodafone PrepaySIM yesterday to put inside a Wavecom GSM/GPRS (2G) modem that is connected to a remote weather station, but when I contacted Vodafone to set it up, they told me that it will not work. This seems to conflict with your reply to a previous customer. The technical advisor at Vodafone said that the hardware (i.e. the Wavecom modem - which is about ten years old) needs to be more than 2G capable. Is this really the case?
Having installed the SIM inside the modem, when I call the number the indicator light shows that it has recognised that a call is coming through to it, but it currently does not allow me to communicate with it (presumably because the SIM has not been registered by Vodafone yet).

@sturman 2G G900 still alive and kicking.
Why don't you activate the SIM by putting it in a handset and calling 777 from it to activate via the IVR.

Thanks - the SIM card is all set up and topped up, but now it rings once when I call it and then goes totally silent, so does not seem to be answering properly. Is there anything I need to do to set up the SIM so that it can generate/handle the squeaks and sqawks of the GPRS communications (does it need to be told that it is being used for transmitting/receiving FSK signals)?

No changes will need to be made on the SIM end, this will be a device or a device configuration issue.

@sturman Just make sure, if you're wanting to use GPRS data, that you configure the correct APN in the device.
APN name: vodafone
