poor coverage in Paeroa/Turua area

Hi All,

I have been connected to Wireless Nation which uses the Vodafone network for about 6 months and in the past week it has got really poor. Typical downloads were in the 10-20Mbs but sometimes as good as 50Mbs with uploads anywhere between 5-15Mbs so pretty good. Lately it has been dropping down to 3G and giving speeds like dial up which is hopeless. Wireless nation have fobbed me off as where i live is on the fringes of 4G and as i had an older Yagi and not the one they recommend they couldnt/wouldnt help. In desperation i sourced an ANT-228 8dBi dual polazried antenna and have set it up to point at the AORANGI ROAD PAEROA (WKT-012-003-A) tower yesterday, BOOM 66Mbs downloads with great 4G coverage. Last night and this morning 3G only at 1-3Mbs down and sub 1Mbs uploads, basically hopeless.

Any of your Ninja's know of any issues down there as Wirelss Nation are not answering calls this morning or replying to messages and frankly i am over it but short of moving house i have few options.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

Hi Kevin, I've checked some performance data on that particular site and don't see anything particularly wrong about it.

Would suggest taking a note of the primary scrambling codes (PCI) in use when you're getting good 4G and slow 3G. Will tell you if you're connected to different sites. If its the B315 router you have i'm pretty sure you can see it when you log into the home page of the routers gui.

At a guess you're likely connecting to the Karangahake tower when you're getting the slower speeds as that cell doesnt have 4G yet.

HI Nigel, Scrambling code is 364 at the moment with slow 3G, and i cant get 4G for love nor money apparently! Does the Turua/Ngatea tower have 4G capability as that is probably closer to me than Paeroa.

Looks like that will be Mangatarata. No 4G on that site currently.

Can use this site to get your bearings its looks like it's up to date - https://gis.geek.nz/celltowers#cellsites_spark

Be looking mostly for a cell which transmits at 700 MHz although there's some 1800 and 2600 4G sites too. 700 most likely to be relevant as that what we use in rural areas (signal can travel further)

The only site I can find in the with that PCI is Kaiaua!

Maybe some antennae adjustment to face that direction might help if its currently facing Paeroa Smiley Happy

I will get the compass out, re-aim the antenna towards Mangatarata as that would be closer and reboot the router. If that fails i will have a shot at Kaiaua. I really appreciate you assistance with this. WN still havent replied to my email or phone messages from yesterday!!

PCI 43???

Seems to be the best so far! I cant get Mangatarata as it is either grabbing PCI 397 or 43 now

Would say that one would be Tahuna SH27 - its on a hill so it's got a pretty large coverage footprint.
