Mobile Broadband vs RBI?

Trying to understand what the difference is between these, can only get mobile broadband currently at home (have direct line of sight with cell tower) so get good coverage. Looking up RBI, this doesn't look like it's planned to get close to my location (stops on the other side of a large hill). What's the difference between these at a high level? As both are wireless, it doesn't seem to make total sense that the 3G cell tower across the valley can't provide rural broadband via wireless also.

Can someone with a bit more knowledge explain this to me?

Biggest difference I think might be be capacity - as I understand the RBI towers are generally equiped with better backhaul fibre connections and more wireless capacity.

The RBI SIMs are also TAC locked to specific approved devices, so you can't just put an RBI SIM in any 3G dongle and expect it to work.

Also with RBI installs you generally get an external Yagi antenna connected to the 3G modem/router for improved signal gain and better reception/data speeds.

Yep - can confirm that. When a site is upgraded to RBI it gets a capacity boost and these days has 4G on 700MHz added too.

From what I understand, the tower is licensed to use that band, but it may not actually operate on that tower

I don't know the specifics for the exact site. I think sometimes the exact frequencies used can vary depending on what's used on neighbouring sites.

I'm trying to revive this in hopes of getting some new info.

Just got another flyer in the mail about gettiing RBI, when I look up the coverage map our small property seems to be one of the only ones not covered by planned upgrades? Wanting to check what upgrades are happening and to which towers, as our local cell tower provides us with mobile broadband currently, but often gets maxed out, particularly later in the day, so paying $130 a month for a mobile plan that I can't make the most of.

Hoping it might be upgraded, or understand what is, so whether we will be able to get RBI in some way or form.

Thanks for any responses in advance

Afternoon. Do you happen to know what tower you're connected to currently?

Thanks for the response Nigel. I can't remember the name, it's 15km east of Tarawera (near boundary between Hawkes Bay and Bay of Plenty), servces the Te Haroto area also. We also have the cell towers behind us above Te Pohue, where I do get a small amount Telecom reception from.
