What type of device are you using? Android, iOS etc....
The outgoing mail server should be as follows
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.ihug.co.nz
User Name: Email Address
Password: Email Password

I have my settings exactly as shown above but I'm still getting the error message connection to outgoing server failed

I have found on cruise ships one has to use Vodafones Webmail to send emails as the ship will not give out their smtp
Maybe Webmail could work for you

Thanks for the suggestions about using webmail, but it's not a practical solution. I would like to be able use my normal email client seamlessly no matter whose network I'm on. why do some isps reject the Vodafone SMTP server, because not all do?

I imagine it would be for their network security or something similar. But you will have to take this up with the relevant ISP.
