Significantly slower VDSL speeds since installation

We recently upgraded from ADSL to VDSL.

When the technician came to install the VDSL filter/splitter we measured the down/up line rate at approx 35000/9000 kbps.

A couple days after the install, I noticed the speed had dropped to almost exactly the same as we were getting on ADSL a week earlier 16000/900 (ish).  A week later there has been virtually no improvement.

Pretty disappointing. It seems clear that something has gone wrong somewhere. It is possible to take a look at the connection from the "other end" to ensure it's all set up correctly?

Here are some stats:

System uptime is 14days, 10hours...

DSL synchronization status: Up
Connection status: Showtime
Upstream line rate (kbit/s): 928
Downstream line rate (kbit/s): 17138
Maximum upstream rate (kbit/s): 952
Maximum downstream rate (kbit/s): 18919
Upstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 9.2
Downstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 9.3
Upstream interleave depth: 0
Downstream interleave depth: 0
Line standard: VDSL
Upstream line attenuation (dB): 5.4
Downstream line attenuation (dB): 10.9
Upstream output power (dBmV): 9.1
Downstream output power (dBmV): 18.6
Downstream interleave depth: None
DSL up time: 2 days 20 hours 36 minutes 11 seconds

Cheers,

Carly

Issue identified thanks to DarrynJ. Cheers bud.

Seems that the switch from ADSL to VDSL is technically a "sidegrade" for us at this location, and should not have happened as there is no possible advantage to be gained from it.

Just thinking back to when the Chorus tech had finished installing the filter and commenting on the significant speed increase we'd see. Of all people he should have known!

It must be time for me to talk to somebody at Vodafone about my thoughts regarding a certain 12 month contract I recently signed.

Cheers for getting to the bottom of it.

+1 to DarrynG

-1 to Vodafone customer services for selling me VDSL at this location

-5 to Chorus for enthusiastically provisioning nothing of material substance

Hi Carly,

VDSL goes through a calibration period over the first 10-15 days of install to figure out the optimial line stability and speed. You would of been getting 35mbps but it would of read unstable or signal levels would of been too high so the calibration would of down scaled to the most stable and best speed with that stability.

I can have a look if you would like to PM me your account number.

Cheers Darryn - makes a bit of sense. It would be very intresting to get some sort of indication of other users connection speeds in the immediate vicinity - it may help point to a potential wiring issue here, for example.

I have PM'd you my A/c no.

Off topic - @CarlyMcPherson - Loving your post. We have all the numbers and info we need right off the bat. Very handy. And Darryn is correct in saying that DLM (Dynamic Line Management) would be at play here in adjusting the speed in relation to your noise margins. Will leave it with Darryn for further investigation.
