Vodafone Smart N8, almost constantly asking to set default home app

This is driving me insane,

 

No matter what I do or how I set it, it will ask me to select the default app, choosing between standard home screen and simple home screen.  I always select "always"

 

Manually setting the default under settings makes no difference.  You might get 15 minutes before it starts asking again. 

 

I did a system reset from within settings and it started asking me almost immediately after it was set in the setup screen.

 

I have tried disabling/removing Simple home screen but since its a system app this cannot be done.

 

Any ideas?

Answering my own question:

 

If you do a factory reset from recovery mode (turn off phone and then hold power and volume up), then that seems to fix it.

 

A reset from within the android software itself does not work.
