Do I get the phone right as I start paying for it?

Hi

 

Yep, you get the phone on the presribed length of time, usually 24 months. The charges appear monthly on your billing so you can keep tabs on how much you have left to pay.

 

It's a good way to be able to get the handset you actually want and not have to pay interest on it too, you are usually signed onto an open term but be aware if you want to cancel your plan at anytime, you have to pay out the remainder of the balance of the handset owing.

If you are signing up to an 'on account' plan with monthly repayments and receiving a phone from VF with it, then yes VF will need to sight ID (generally a current drivers licence) and will run a credit check also.
