As restoration and recovery efforts continue, we’re learning more about the true extent of the damage caused by the November earthquakes. You will have heard that a number of buildings in central Wellington have been marked for demolition as a result of the earthquakes - one of which is home to Vodafone’s Molesworth cell site, located on the roof of Revera House on Mulgrave St. This site provides 2G, 3G and 4G services to a number of businesses and consumers in the Thorndon area.
Vodafone is committed to ensuring our service level is maintained in this area, which is why our team is currently assessing alternative locations for the cell site. An important first step in this relocation process is to better understand the impact of removing the site from its current location (note we have already undertaken theoretical modelling of the impact, but further testing is important to validate these assumptions).
Our technicians are planning to temporarily switch off the Molesworth site to carry out a series of speed tests in nearby buildings and surrounding streets. The data they collect will help determine the best solution for re-establishing the Molesworth site in a new location. During these tests, there is a chance 2G, 3G and 4G services will degrade inside some buildings and local surrounds. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding. We will keep you updated on our progress as we work to relocate the Molesworth site permanently.
The first round of testing is taking place this weekend (18-19 March) between 08:00 and 16:00. Subsequent testing will take place during the following weekend (25-26 March) between 08:00 and 16:00.
